The position is available at the Department of Architecture on the Otaniemi Campus. The Department of Architecture at the Aalto University is the oldest and largest of the three schools of architecture in Finland. The position is connected to a newly-established professorship of Landscape Architecture. The degree programme of landscape architecture in Aalto is the only academic institute in the field. Landscape architecture is an internationally important discipline and a growing profession in Finland; its scope has recently diversified and increased significantly. The degree programme of Landscape Architecture has three professorships and two lecturers, in addition to research staff. The degree programme is currently divided into three study areas: 1) landscape design, 2) landscape planning, and 3) urban design and planning (shared with the degree programme of Architecture). The programme promotes multidisciplinary interactions with other disciplines like Architecture, Urban Studies and Environmental Studies. During the last decade, the department has strengthened its research activity to meet the future challenges of planning. The research in landscape architecture is interdisciplinary and the researchers have been studying e.g. ecosystem services, green infrastructures, historical landscapes and preservation.
Main duties and responsibilities
The task of postdoctoral researcher is to support and strengthen research at the Department of Architecture. The postdoctoral researcher’s main duties include conducting research and publishing results, collaborating with the professor and other research staff of the department, participating in the preparation of funding applications (grant writing) and developing new research projects. The duties also include supporting teaching and administrative duties of the professorship.
Key selection criteria
A successfully gained Doctoral Degree in a relevant research field is required. Applicants’ research potential and merits, in addition to grant writing abilities and excellent writing skills in English will be given particular emphasis during the selection process. The applicant is expected to have research experience in at least one of the following topics or themes related to them:
1) Socio-cultural and historical dimensions of the landscape
2) Urban green typologies and strategies in urban densification
3) Urban green and open space governance including participatory planning
4) Historic garden and landscape preservation and restoration
Salary
The salary is determined based on the experience and qualifications of the applicant, according to the salary system of Aalto University.
